A New World of Music Inspired by 'Sleep' in Judaism and Using Quartets by 1991-born composer Jacob Muehlrad, described as "one of the best and most imaginative orchestral composers in the world" Renowned Swedish art music composer born in 1991 Jacob Mühlrad is quickly emerging as one of the most well-known composers in Scandinavia. Mühlrad's works turn their gaze in eternal directions: to human nature and what constitutes man's place in the world, to mortality, and to holiness. Mühlrad says that music is connected to the foundation of the universe. For him, making music is akin to practicing religion, and above all, being Jewish plays an important role in his art. On this album, he enters an intimate spiritual world, the world of "Sleep". Again, he is inspired by sleep in the Jewish faith as a moment in which the soul, detached from the body, "replenishes" its spiritual energy.In addition, "quartets" from an Indian raga are incorporated, giving the piece a magical glow as it wanders through harmonies that spread out like an organ. Furthermore, "REMS" is an attempt to interpret and materialize the melodies of Jewish prayers and lullabies. Its purpose is not to lull the listener to sleep, but on the contrary, to sharpen the awareness of the body, soul, and spirit as they go through the sleep cycle. Placed before "REMS," Mühlrad's 2018 composition for baroque cello, "Maggid," anticipates the idea of tonal and rhythmic melodies embedded in a large orchestra, which is part of the themes and motifs of "REMS." This abridged version (2023) with "REMS" had its world premiere at Suntory Hall on August 24, 2023 with Matthias Pincher (conductor) and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. Warner Music Japan
