John Nelson, the authority on Berlioz, turns to Messiah with a period-instrument orchestra and chorus - a reading of real presence, delicate, translucent and resplendent in tone. With eight bonus tracks of alternative versions of arias, plus a DVD of the complete live performance. The import edition handled by Warner Music Japan alone includes Japanese notes and a translation of the texts. In November 2022 John Nelson conducted Handel's Messiah at Coventry Cathedral in England. The release comprises three discs: two CDs and one DVD. The score he chose is based on the standard version of 1741, with some numbers substituted from the versions performed on several occasions up to the early 1750s, giving the work greater expressive scope. "A lifetime of performing Messiah has given me the courage to record this incomparably famous music. Now, surrounded by some of the finest musicians and soloists on earth, I am finally ready to leave my own personal interpretation for posterity," says John Nelson. The CDs also include eight bonus tracks presenting alternative versions of well-known arias. The performers are the period instruments and chorus (around 40 singers) of The English Concert, founded by Trevor Pinnock. The orchestra is on the larger side (with four oboes), and the soloists are soprano Lucy Crowe, countertenor Alex Potter, tenor Michael Spyres and bass-baritone Matthew Brook. The Japanese booklet contains a translation of the detailed programme notes by David Vickers, a trustee of the Handel Institute, a newly commissioned essay by the musicologist Takumi Kato, and a translation of the sung texts.
