On RIVERS OF HERESY, Mike's creations run the gamut of alt-metal soundscapes, from full-throttle collaborations between Siege and Slayer ("Stutter," "Palm of Hands") to songs that toggle between mass rock chaos and grindcore ferocity ("Blusher," "Sold! ) to slower stoner rock menaces ("Sons and Daughters"), Mike's productions roar with heavy sounds that traverse the alt-metal sonic landscape. But even within that sound, there are surprises, such as the vocal-drums-only "Tired, Aye?" in the vein of John Zorn's "Naked City," which is a bit of a surprise. Meanwhile, Simon's vocals, with their pathologically misanthropic lyrics, are downright eclectic, ranging from the screams and wheezes of Mike Patton's work with Fantomas to the guttural death-voiced roars of Morbid Angel and Mayhem, and all manner of other grotesque vocalizations. Mike candidly states, "I set out to make the most venomous, vulgar music possible.I expressed my hatred in the form of music," says Simon, adding, "The lyrics are the most misanthropic and nihilistic things I've ever written. The debut album of EMPIRE STATE BASTARD, "The Curse" of the alternative metal scene, is now ready for the dark and chaotic world. (2/2)
