Description:
Alexander Denbich charts his own unique course, regardless of genre—whether it’s classical, arrangements, or original compositions. His arrangement of “Rhapsody in Blue” for piano and wind quintet is thrilling! Alexander Denbich is one of Poland’s most popular pianists and composers. He was the winner of the 2013 “Transatlantyk Instant Composition Contest” and reached No. 1 on the Polish classical charts with his album “Cinematic Piano,” featuring his own piano works inspired by film scores. Shortly after releasing “Bach: Inventions,” he followed up with the album “Adela,” which features a diverse range of works—from Western classical composers such as Bach, Ravel, Satie, and Rodrigo, as well as works by the contemporary Brazilian composer Gismonti and his own original compositions. The creative depth of his arrangements—which significantly rework the source material—has overturned the common perception of classical music as merely a “note-reproducing machine” and generated significant buzz. “As an abstract art form, music can stray from the beaten path, regardless of whether it is rooted in the classical genre, jazz, or film,” Denbichi says. On this album, musicians who share Denbichi’s vision have joined him in an effort to learn new things and push the boundaries of their art. Treating atmosphere and the choice of musical means as separate entities, the album continues with “The Portals,” which has a cinematic quality; the mellow and subdued “Bach: Piano Concerto No. 5”; and “Pasacatedral,” a concerto-like piece for guitar and oboe. The mood then shifts dramatically with the energetic and edgy “The Portals,” and the excitement reaches its peak with “Rhapsody in Blue,” arranged for piano and wind quintet—the boldest piece on the album. Finally, “Cold Little Heart” is played improvisationally, much like a movie’s closing credits. Warner Music Japan
