Bottesini, Giovanni (1821-1889)
Description:
A collection of Bottezini concertos with three-string double bass by Wies de Bouff, principal double bass of the Bavarian Radio Symphony OrchestraWies de Bouff, double bassist, was born in Belgium in 1987. He studied with Bozo Parad at the Lucerne Conservatory and with others such as Siegjanne Saxara and Esco Reine, winner of the 2015 German Music Competition, winner of the 2017 Bottesini Competition, and currently principal double bass of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Buch's featured work on this album is a collection of works by Italian composer and double bassist Giovanni Bottesini (1821-1889). Bottegini first showed talent on the violin, but when he entered the Milan Conservatory, he was accepted on the double bass when a scholarship slot became available. 1835-39, he began performing in 1840, and Verdi encouraged him to become a soloist, establishing the status of the double bass as a solo instrument. A virtuoso, he has been called the Paganini of the double bass. He also studied composition with Verdi and became active as an opera composer, composing 12 operas. The contrabass was originally the lowest stringed instrument of either the viola da gamba or the violin, and in the Baroque period it had three to six strings (even with frets). In the 19th century, when virtuosos with superb technique were active, the "three-string contrabass" was a highly prized instrument for soloists. In Bottegini's photographs, the three-string double bass is shown together. Passage-wise, four or five strings should be easier to play, but why three strings? Because of the beauty of the tone! There is no other reason. Of course, to produce a beautiful tone, one needs to have superb technique, but Buf has studied the playing techniques and scores in the Parma library and has proven that it is not impossible to play lustrous cantabile like the cello and overwhelm people with agile passages like the violin. The result is a performance that is as beautiful as a cello and as agile as a violin. Warner Music Japan
