Formed in Leeds, England, SOFTCELL is the renowned pioneering synth-pop duo consisting of vocalist MARCALMOND and synthesizer player DAVEBALL. They shocked the scene with the decadent electronic sounds of their 1981 album *NON-STOPEROTICCABARET* and had a profound influence on subsequent generations. Their return with the 2022 album *HAPPINESSNOTINCLUDED* is still fresh in our memories; they have consistently upheld their unique aesthetic through the fusion of ethereal vocals and cold, clinical electronic sounds. Released in June 2026, this marks the duo’s final album—completed just two days before DAVEBALL’s passing in October 2025. Imbued with a love for the early ’80s New York club scene—where they recorded their early masterpieces—and a tribute to their longtime ally, this album vividly captures an ensemble that can be called the culmination of their career, where the glittering heat of disco intersects with the hustle and bustle of the night. Featuring 12 tracks—including “DANCETERIA,” where dazzling string synths dance through the air, and “OUTCOMETHEFREAKS,” with its pulsating, heavy bassline—melancholic melodies strike a chord while dramatic electronic sounds surge with energy. The album unfolds as an immersive listening experience that vividly brings to life the scenes of a metropolis after dark and the frenzy of the dance floor.
