Known for Les Misérables, Hugo was—and remains to this day—one of France’s greatest poets and writers, a figure the nation takes pride in on the world stage, so much so that he was laid to rest with a state funeral. “Today, we lack ‘the voice of Hugo’—a voice capable of conveying the hopes and anxieties of the people, transcending public debate, and adding a touch of poetry to the harshness of our times. Or rather, we lack his many voices. The voice of a witness to his times—a voice that observed the lives of the people and chronicled politics. The voice of a poet—the voice of a Romantic troubadour who sang of everything from the majestic to the dreamlike. And the voice of the activist—a voice dreaming of social progress, improved lives for the most vulnerable, the abolition of the death penalty, the advent of the Republic, and a united Europe.” These are the words of Christophe Barbier, who narrates this CD. Mr. Barbier is a political journalist and columnist. The man standing with sheet music on the album cover is Mr. Barbier, and the woman at the piano is singer Pauline Courtain.
