Les Ambassadeurs / La Grande Ecurie

Description:

Mendelssohn's "Scottish" and "Fingal's Cave" The First-Draft First Recording on Period Instruments! Performed by the Merged Ensemble of Les Zambasadeurs, Led by Koshenko, and La Grande Écurie, Founded by Marguillier Founded in 2012 by recorder player and musicologist Alexis Koshenko, the orchestra "Les Zambassadeurs" performed a wide repertoire on period instruments, ranging from Bach to Stravinsky and Debussy. In 2018, it merged with another period instrument ensemble, La Grande Écurie (Royal Stables/Royal Palace Orchestra). This merger occurred after the death of La Grande Écurie's founder, Marguerite, when the ensemble chose Koshenko as its successor. This merged orchestra now presents Mendelssohn. Both "Scottish" and "Fingal's Cave," though composed about ten years apart, were inspired by Mendelssohn's 1829 tour of Britain and his visit to Fingal's Cave. We have chosen the lesser-known "first draft versions" rather than the later revised editions. This recording is noteworthy as the first time these versions have been recorded on period instruments. After leaving Scotland, Mendelssohn began serious work on composing "Fingal's Cave" during his stay in Rome, completing the first draft—known as the "Roman version"—in December 1830. He played this draft on the piano for Berlioz, who praised it highly. However, Mendelssohn soon began revising the work. For instance, he removed the D major forte section in the middle. The revised version premiered in May 1832 with the London Philharmonic Society. Initial reactions were mixed, but it soon became widely cherished as one of Mendelssohn's signature works. Many of Mendelssohn's revisions aimed to condense the material, which may make the revised version feel slightly lengthy to modern ears accustomed to it. Yet this does not imply the early version is inferior. Interestingly, his friend Moscheles preferred the early version over the later one. APARTE
