Description:
David and Jonathan, written at the height of Charpentier's creative career, a production of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles Charpentier's religious tragedy "David and Jonathan". Although Charpentier is known for his many recorded religious works, he also composed music for popular Parisian playwrights such as Molière and Corneille, and left behind numerous dramatic music works. This work was written in 1688 for students at a Jesuit college. It depicts the fraternal love between David and Jonathan and the cruel struggle for power. The prologue is devoid of the customary praise of kings and nobles, and there is virtually no recitative or devertissement. The use of counterpoint for the drama and psychology of the characters, combined with the refinement of the harmonies, makes this one of Charpentier's finest creations.There have been some excellent recordings by Christie and others, but this recording is special in that it is a project of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, an organization dedicated to the study and dissemination of French Baroque music, and that it is composed of male voices (Jonathan is a female soprano) and children's chorus, taking into account the situation of the Jesuits of the time.
