Zoltan Darrago (Countertenor) Christophe Rousset (conductor and organ) Les Talents Lilique Recorded: February 14~17, 2023 / Notre Dame du Liban Church (Church of Our Lady of Lebanon), Paris, France (CD) DDD Digipak specification 60'00 Christophe Rousset and Les Talents Lilique record Bach cantatas! This is the first Bach cantata in the recorded repertoire of Rousset & Les Talents Lilique. However, this is not just a cantata album. It is an album of arias for alto from their many cantatas. Only BWV 185 was written in 1715 during the Weimar period, but it was replayed in the early Leipzig period, so it is possible to find arias from cantatas that were performed in the same period. The arias are from the cantatas that were performed in the same period. The artists' commitment to the concept of this album can be seen in the fact that they did not simply arrange famous arias, but rather limited the selection to the pieces that were composed immediately after Thomas Cantor's appointment in Leipzig, a major turning point in Bach's life, and that they dared to focus only on arias, without adding symphonies or other pieces. The singer who performs with Rousset & Le Thalang Lilique on this recording is the up-and-coming countertenor Zoltan Darrago. He is a talented young Hungarian singer with a wide repertoire of not only old music but also songs and contemporary operas. He came into the limelight in 2022 when he sang the title role in Philip Glass's opera "Akhnaten" featuring the King of Egypt at Opera Skala in Finland. With her clear, colorful voice and superb technique, Darrago brings out from Bach's religious music not only piety but also sensuality reminiscent of the colorful religious paintings of the Italian Baroque era. Supporting D'Arrigo, Le Taran Lilik takes a relatively large string 6-5-3-4-1 formation. Flute, oboe, oboe d'amore, oboe da caccia, and horns are added depending on the piece. In the pieces where the obbligato instruments play an active role, the virtuosity of Les Talents Lilique's virtuoso singers also shines through, adding even more brilliance to the colorfulness of the singing. In BWV 35, in particular, Rousset's organ and Darrago's singing are as beautiful as if they were singing a sweet duet. The arias in Bach's cantatas and Passions have been greatly influenced by Italian opera, not only in the form of ABA da capo arias, but also in melody and instrumentation. D'Arrigo's sensual singing and Les Talents Lilique's skillful performance show us that in Bach's cantatas, religious faith (cantata) was also linked to secular sweetness (opera). Don't miss this new innovation in the performance of Bach's cantatas, which Rousset has demonstrated with an up-and-coming countertenor. (King International)
