Liszt: The Second Volume of “Legends of the Saints”! Here is the second volume of Liszt’s “Legends of the Saints,” performed by Hazelbeck. Following Vol. 1 (AP.297), this volume also features a stellar lineup of vocalists. After entering the priesthood in 1865, Liszt began composing numerous works based on Christian themes. Unlike most other composers, he wrote a great deal of music about saints, drawing inspiration from paintings and books. In this series, we present works that set to music the stories of various Christian saints as “Legends of the Saints.” All the works included on this album are from Liszt’s later years. Although Liszt’s third oratorio, “St. Stanislaus,” remains unfinished, the “Intermezzo”—which Liszt originally conceived as a standalone instrumental piece—is a fully realized orchestral work. Two pieces dedicated to Saint Cecilia are included; while S5 features a large orchestra and quotations from Gregorian chant, S343 is a work for a relatively small ensemble with a meditative atmosphere—their completely different characters make this a fascinating contrast. Although Saint Christopher is not widely known, he is the patron saint of travelers and is said to give strength to those on the road.
