The Oistrakh Quartet led by Andrei Baranov, winner of the violin section of the 2012 Queen Elisabeth International Competition, showcases the formidable concentration and technique of young Russian string players. The quartet expanded into a sextet with two Russian virtuosos as guests and took on the masterpieces by Tchaikovsky and Schoenberg. What surprised me most of all was the high tension in the Tchaikovsky piece. Baranov's expressive singing of the melodies is unmistakably Russian, but the ensemble's unwavering commitment was terrifying. The guest cello player, Aleksandr Buzurov, a favorite pupil of Natalya Gutman, had attracted attention as a soloist, but his sudden death on November 8, 2020 at the age of 38 from a stroke sent shockwaves through the Russian musical world. This is his last recording, made about a year before his death, and it is also his last recording, and it is an uncanny one. Schoenberg's "Pure Night" is a chamber music version. The rich and meaningful expression of this work shows a unique presence amidst the abstinent and soft interpretations of recent years.
