Description:
Singing of a spirit that transcends race and gender in these challenging times. Marie-Laure Garnier, a Black lyric soprano born in 1991 in French Guiana, South America, and pianist Célia Onetto Benside, born in Paris in 1992, have been performing as a duo since 2011. On their first release on the Nomad label, they seek to create a dialogue between the French songs of Poulenc and Messiaen and Black spirituals—exploring themes of sacredness, hope, and the unprecedented hardships humanity has endured. French art songs have always been at the heart of their repertoire, and while Poulenc and Messiaen offer exquisite expressions, each piece is deeply moving with a strong sense of the sacred. Black spirituals are woven into this mix. The group has long performed African-American spirituals as an important part of their repertoire. While this music may seem very distant from French art songs, the songs sung by people brought from Africa to the Americas during their grueling farm labor also express a spirit of brotherhood and hope for liberation. Although they are typically sung a cappella, this program features versions arranged as classical works with piano accompaniment by African American composers who received formal musical training in the 19th and 20th centuries.
