Andreas Scholl's new album is a masterpiece by Brouwer! Andreas Scholl, who made his debut with Harmonia Mundi as a treasured son of Jacobs, is now a veteran at 54 years old. He released an album on the Aparte label with Edin Karamazov, a lute and guitar player from Bosnia and Herzegovina, with whom he has been working for several years. This is the long-awaited new album. Although Scholl is most often associated with ancient music, he performs three pieces from a collection of five English folk songs arranged by Leo Brouwer in 2015 for both he and Karamazov. The emotion of the famous "Sally Garden" shows Scholl's deep musicality and life experience. The "Love Songs," with poems in Spanish by Lorca and others, is also a masterpiece. The inclusion of "O Lord, Joy of Man's Desiring" also shows a spirit of service. What is also a delight is the inclusion of Karamazov's solo. In addition to the Browell works, he performs Bach's "Suite No. 1 for Unaccompanied Cello" (six pieces in all) on lute.Karamazov, who studied with Hopkinson Smith at the Schola Kantorum Basel, has a wide range, not only with Scholl but also with the Hilliard Ensemble and Sting.
