The latest disc by the Hanson Quartet, a French quartet of note, is a program about "night"! The Hanson Quartet was formed in 2013, and their second release is a collection of works with "night" as the keyword. The first one, Haydn (AP213), was meaningfully titled "ALL SHALL NOT DIE", and this time it is "NOT ALL CATS ARE GREY". This time, however, the title is "NOT ALL CATS ARE GREY," a reference to the English proverb, "In the dark, all cats look gray" (looks are not important). Dutilleux's famous and difficult piece "Night is like that" is very full and musical. The harmony of the accumulated tones and the seemingly inorganic sound patterns are all suffused with blood, giving the performance a warm feeling. The secretive atmosphere and scenes of "Night" come to life in beautiful and varied ways. The Hanson Quartet was formed in 2013 by Hat Bayerle (European Academy of Chamber Music), the Ebène Quartet, and Jean Schlemm.The multi-talented ensemble performs Haydn's string quartets, as well as works by contemporary composers such as Toshio Hosokawa, Wolfgang Rihm, and Matthias Pincher. In 2016, the ensemble won the second prize at the Geneva International Music Competition and the second prize at the Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in the same year, where it also won the Haydn Prize, the Audience Prize, and the Best Performance of a 20th Century Composer Award.
