New recordings with the new music director of the Konzentus Musikus Wien! Schubert's (Un)Completed! The Concentus Musicus Wien, founded by Arnoncourt and his wife in 1953, is releasing their first CD since Arnoncourt's death in 2016. He leads the orchestra with Erich Höwald (concert master) and Andrea Bischoff (second concert master), both well-known members of the Mosaic String Quartet. They featured Schubert. With world-renowned baritone Florian Bösch as soloist, the orchestra performed Schubert's songs arranged for orchestra by Brahms and Webern, and Schubert's Unfinished Symphony in four movements (the third movement was based on a sketch left by Schubert by composer Nicolas Sammerle and musicologist The third movement is a completion of Schubert's sketch by composer Nicolas Sommerlé and musicologist Benjamin Gunnar Kohls, and the fourth movement is an interlude from Rosamunde.Besh's singing is spare and precise, depicting the world of diction and poetry on a majestic scale, and the orchestral accompaniment is wonderful, enhancing that world as well. In the Unfinished, the exquisite ensemble cultivated by Arnoncourt explodes. The clear enunciation of the wind instruments in the first movement is a bit startling. The third and fourth movements also flowed naturally, and it could be said that an ideal performance was born. The sound that filled the hall of the Musikverein in Vienna was pleasantly captured, and the performance was as powerful as if you were in a hall.
