What is noteworthy here is that Kuchar, a Russian master conductor, is also in charge of conducting. Kuchar has earned a reputation for his recordings of Kalinnikov's symphonies and a series of Prokofiev recordings for Naxos. This is a rich three-disc set that conveys a strong sympathy and deep understanding of the masterpieces by the country's greatest composers. Some people may consider suites and film music lighter than Shostakovich's symphonies and string quartets, but the quality of the works on this disc speaks for itself and deserves a thorough listening. At a budget price, this is a highly recommended disc.
