Modern accessible piano music where tradition and avant-garde coexistThis 2-CD album contains all the piano music of George Benjamin [1960- ], a British composer known for his unique, innovative, and exciting music that seamlessly weaves together traditional and avant-garde elements. The "Piano Sonata," written in his earliest period, was completed in 1978, a powerful work with complex textures from a period when he was hailed as a genius, studying composition with Olivier Messiaen and piano with Yvonne Loriot in Paris. The "Sortilège" at the beginning of the album is another early work, composed in 1981. This one was dedicated to Loriot and is in the French tradition. Three Exercises for Piano" was written between 1982 and 1985, and seems to tackle complex rhythmic problems. Oricantus" was written for the 50th birthday of his friend Oliver Nassen, and "Shadow Lines" is a set of six canonical preludes for emaar. Ten Pieces for Piano" is a 2004 work with a variety of musical ideas thrown in. The performer, Eric Belch, is a Dutch-born, Italy-based pianist in the field of contemporary music.Marco Stroppa's collection of works, released in 2021, was highly acclaimed in various magazines.
