English musician active in Rome for half a century,,This album contains concertos and sonatas by Robert Valentine (c.1671-1747), an English-born musician who lived in Rome in the late Baroque period. Valentine was born in Leicester, central England, around 1671. His father and brothers Henry and Thomas were musicians, and Robert probably learned to play an instrument early on. At the time, Europe was rocked by the War of the Grand Alliance, a war of aggression provoked by Louis XIV that involved England, the Habsburgs, the Holy Roman Empire, the Netherland, Spain, Savoia, and Sweden, and perhaps because the war was long over, Valentine was in his 20s when he moved to the Papal States of He emigrated to Rome. In Rome, his career blossomed, and in 1701 he married a Roman woman, Giulia Bellatti. From then until his death in Rome in 1747, he worked under the name Roberto Valentini as a recorder player, flutist, violinist, oboe player, and composer in numerous churches. Influenced by the Corelli style, he eventually adopted the Gallant style as well, and left behind a wide variety of works.The performance is by the Afratus Ensemble, an ancient instrumental group founded by traverso player Enrico Casularo, who is dedicated to introducing unknown works from 18th century Italy and elsewhere. The booklet (12 pages, in English) includes a commentary by Enrico Casularo, who performed the piece.
