The clarinet portrays the rich musicality of the Donizetti brothers
Donizetti, famous as a bel canto opera composer, wrote many works other than operas, and this recording includes about 28 minutes of instrumental music, including arrangements, and about 30 minutes of music for voice and wind instruments.
Donizetti's older brother Giuseppe, nine years Donizetti's senior, also excelled in wind instruments and military music, and after six years as director of a military band in the Austrian army, he was invited by the Ottoman sultan to train a successful military band for 25 years before his death in Constantinople. This album contains the "Battle" and the two sonatas for clarinet, a combined total of about 29 minutes.
The album also includes a variation and concerto on the famous melody of Donizetti's opera by a contemporary composer, totaling about 25 minutes.
The performance is by the Italian Classical Consort, led by Magistrelli, who are enthusiastic about presenting unusual clarinet repertoire, and is pleasantly enjoyable over 112 minutes.
The booklet (English, 12 pages) includes a commentary by Luigi Magistrelli on the performance.
