Tenor viola and alto viola also used! Regrenzi was an active composer of operas and oratorios in 17th century Italy, but he also published instrumental music collections, and here we have the first complete recording of his "Collection of Barretto and Corrento," Op. 16, and two pieces from his "Sonatas in Five Voices," Op. 8. It is a collection of courtly dances consisting of 18 pieces alternating two-beat barrettes and three-beat chorrentes, the last of which is written in the chaconne style and consists of 13 variations based on ostinato. Although the date of composition is not known, it is likely that Legrenzi, a cathedral organist and priest in Bergamo, was invited at the age of 30 by Marquis Bentivoglio, a scriptwriter, to become music director of the "Accademia del Santo Spirito" in Ferrara, a professional association for musicians founded by the nobility. The fact that the work may have been written during the Ferrara period suggests that there was a demand for courtly style works. The two pieces from the combination "Sonatas in Five Voices," Op. 8, were published in the Ferrara period, and the "Sonatas in Five Voices," Op. 9, Op. 10, Op. 11, Op. 12, and Op. 13 were published in the Ferrara period. The performance is by the Italian old music ensemble "Il Trattenimento Armonico", which uses "A=440Hz" considering that the music is from the middle Baroque period near Venice, where the pitch was high. Note that "Il Trattenimento Armonico" had also recorded two pieces from "Sonatas for Strings" Op.8, "Sonatas for Five Voices" on the Urania label, but the intonation is even clearer in this performance. The booklet (English, 8 pages) includes a commentary by Nicola Reniero on the performance.
