Introduction Adagio~Presto 11'06 Performers Razumovsky Quartet Dora Vlachkova (1st Violin) Andrea Zakser Keller (2nd Violin) Gerhard Muller (viola) Alina Kudelevich (cello) Recorded April 2024, New Studio "G&G", Aldea, Italy Sergei Taneyev [1856-1915] was a composer who lived at the end of the Russian Empire,A virtuoso pianist, he was responsible for the Moscow premiere of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, but he chose to become a composer and also taught Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Metonel, Glière, and others as an educator. Taneyev was a man of advanced intellectual pursuits, writing his diary in Esperanto and trying to bring mathematical formulas to counterpoint composition, but he also had a deep knowledge of the traditional intellectual world of folk culture, philosophy, and religion. His String Quartet No. 1 was dedicated to his teacher Tchaikovsky, who greatly admired it. It is a popular five-movement work that has been performed not only in Moscow and St. Petersburg, but also throughout Europe. The String Quartet No. 4 is a dense work that uses a counterpoint technique to build interconnections between themes from individual motifs to create a tightly-knit whole. In the Adagio, one can fully enjoy the lyrical beauty that is one of Taneyev's specialties. The Razumovsky Quartet, which recorded a critical edition of the complete string quartets on the Ames label in 2006 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Shostakovich's birth, is well known for its meticulous performance based on research and study. The booklet (English, 8 pages) includes commentary by viola player Gerhard Müller. (Tobu Shoji)
