Giovanni Paolo Cima (1570-1630) was a composer, organist, and violinist active in the Duchy of Milan from the end of the 16th century to the beginning of the 17th century. Born in Milan in 1570 to a family of musicians, Cima was educated in Milan until 1595, when he moved to the He became director of music at the church of Santa Maria Preso San Celso in Milan in 1595 and played an important role in shaping Milan's musical scene until his death in 1630 as a result of the plague epidemic. The stylistic innovations brought by Monteverdi (1567-1643) and Frescobaldi (1583-1643), especially in the field of instrumental music, were important works that led to the later development of the Baroque. Cima, a contemporary of the Cima family, was also involved in instrumental music from early on, publishing a ricercare for organ in 1602.This album includes the "Ricercar & French Style Canzons" (1606), a collection of works from the earliest publication for solo instrument with bass continuo, which is also the prototype for the sonata. Federico del Sordo, who has a proven track record in introducing unusual works, plays both organ and harpsichord, and his counterpoint expression and thematic development. The booklet (8 pages, in English) includes a commentary by Federico del Sordo, who performed the piece.
