Sonatas by a Guitar Composer of the Orthodox Method, a Caricature of the "Carulli School" and the "Molino School" of Guitar LoversThe complete set of guitar sonatas by Francesco Molino [of 1768-1847], a guitar composer known for his caricatures of people fighting between the "Carulli School" and the "Molino School" of guitar lovers. Molino, who played oboe, viola, violin, and guitar, made the guitar his main instrument in 1819, when he was 51 years old and successful in Paris. Rival Carulli [1770-1841], on the other hand, initially played the cello, but taught himself to play the guitar at the age of 20, became a professional in his 30s, and settled down in Paris in 1808, playing a role in the guitar boom there. The book containing the caricature was published in 1829, probably to make fun of the conflict among guitar enthusiasts over Carulli's method of "pressing the strings even with the left thumb" and Molino's orthodox method of "not pressing the strings with the left thumb. The booklet (English, 8 pages) includes a commentary by Giuliani, the performer.
