Description:
Shostakovich sings the original poem back in Italian! Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), a Florentine genius in painting, sculpture, and architecture, was also a poet and left some 300 sonnets and madrigales. The works depict a wide range of emotions, events, satires, protests, complaints, and innuendos, as well as religious matters, and were often used for intimate exchanges and for sonnet exchanges between poets. Those rhyming works also stimulated the creativity of composers, and numerous works have been written from the same period to the present day, but here we have works by Shostakovich and Britten. The Britten works are sung by English tenor Mark Milhofer, while the Shostakovich works are sung by Italian bass singer Mirko Palazzi. In the Shostakovich, the Russian translation by Efros is sung back into the original Italian with rhythmic adjustments. The booklet (English, 8 pages) includes commentary by music critic Sandra Cappelletto.
