VERHEY EMMY / CONCERTGEBOUW CHAMBER ORCHESTRA / MARTURET EDUARDO; Monteverdi, Claudio (1567-1643)
Description:
A precious legacy of Monteverdi's music that is wonderful even in small piecesA collection of small pieces left by Monteverdi. The compositional motives reflect the publishing situation of the time, and the collection contains short vocal pieces based primarily on scripture. The texts are often parts of psalms or hymns, and the collection includes polyphonic and madrigal works as well as very virtuoso duets and solo pieces. For the bass passages, a diverse combination of instruments is chosen, including organ, theorbo, harpsichord, and gamba. The background of the album's creation is related to the situation of music publishing in the 17th century. In Italy, music publishing flourished, and after the "Parnassus Musicus Ferdinandaeus" of 1615, a number of collections of sacred music were published. While the German states were engaged in the Thirty Years' War [1618-1648], the situation in Italy was very different. The growing demand for music, especially religious pieces, led to publishers and composers acting as compilers to collect and publish works from composers.Monteverdi's works, which were popular at various Italian courts, were also included in these collections, and although short, they were also offered with elaborate ornamentation and bold techniques. It is thought that the publishing business was not only profitable and rewarding, but also promotional in the modern sense of the word, and it is a blessing that such thoughtful works can still be enjoyed today, 400 years later. <Les Nuove Musiques was founded in December 2004 by Couttsfeldt and others with the aim of performing vocal music from the first half of the 17th century at the highest level. Not only does it revive music from a period of musical, political, and religious upheaval 400 years later, it also explores its relevance to the present.
