Description:

Title referring to a hurdy-gurdy player, not a man who roasts swans. Hindemith's viola concerto "Der Schwanendreher" translates directly as "The Man Who Turns the Swan," but it has been interpreted and known as "The Man Who Bakes the Swan. However, the text Hindemith placed at the beginning of the score reads, "The minstrels who have joined the merry troupe perform songs they have brought back from foreign lands. Some are serious, some jokey, and some include dances. A true musician, he improvises, extending and embellishing the melodies and adding preludes. The description of Franz Böhme's "German Songbook" (published in 1877 with about 660 songs), which Hindemith quoted, states that this piece was a dance or a kind of joke song around the beginning of the 17th century. The song was a dance or a kind of joke song in the early 17th century. In 17th century paintings and other images, you can often see a hurdy-gurdy that looks just like a swan with its wings plucked, and since the hurdy-gurdy is an instrument that produces sound by spinning the swan's neck-like part, it is reasonable to assume that the "swan spinner" refers to a player who would have been part of a traveling troupe of hurdy-gurdy (Drehleier in German) players. It is reasonable to assume that "the swan-turner" refers to a player who was probably a member of a traveling troupe. The booklet (12 pages in English and Italian) includes a commentary by Alberto Mammarella, professor of music history and theory, organist, and harpsichordist.
