This collection of performances by the Chiconia Consort, a Dutch string orchestra, brings together works for string ensemble by five of the most famous Czech composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Due to the growing interest in the folk music of their own country, rhapsodies became an important musical form for Slavic composers in the mid-19th century. Initially, rhapsodies appeared as song forms, but later, in the mid-19th century, large orchestral instrumental forms also appeared. Rhapsodies often weave improvisational rhapsodic elements into traditional musical forms, often with contrasting styles, moods, and themes common to folk songs. Dick Van Gasteren conducts the Chiconia Consort, the fourth release on Brilliant Classics. He was Bernard Haitink's assistant and is an internationally acclaimed conductor of note.
