Berlin Friday Academy

Description:

Elegant and enchanting chamber music performed at the court of Friedrich the Great. A new recording based on new historical insights is now available. The organ in this recording is the historic organ once owned by the king's sister, Princess Anna Amalia. Today, we associate organs with church music, but it seems that wealthy families in the 18th century owned and used small organs. Jarniciu is unique in that he designates the organ as the passive bass part of the "church" sonatas, as in this recording. The five church sonatas were not necessarily intended for church performance, but they were distinguished from the "chamber sonatas" and exhibited a formal structure of a slow introduction preceded by a lively fugue, a solemn slow movement, and a contrasting finale. Jarnitsch's novel style, modeled on Corelli's, but with a North German variation, gives it a sense of commonality with the music of his famous contemporaries at the Friedrich's court. This repertoire is familiar to the Berlin Friday Academy, an ensemble of young period musicians from around the world who pursue musical beauty through performances, recordings, and scholarly discussions of 18th century music.
