Description:
New recording by Arkady Ivannikov, a pioneering Russian classical guitarist. It features Bach's lute works and Ivannikov's own arrangements. While there is no proof that Bach actually played the lute, it is clear that he was interested in the sound of the instrument, as can be seen in his subtle use of the lute in the John Passion and the Memorial Ode, BWV 198. Of the four suites that seem to have been written with the lute particularly in mind, the recording includes BWV 996 in E minor and BWV 997 in C minor (here transposed to A minor). The selection of the pieces on this recording shows the care that Bach took as an arranger and performer to find the best method, including detailed adjustments in the arrangements to facilitate the adaptation of the four-string violin to the six-string guitar. The Partita in D minor, which closes with a sublime chaconne that seems to have been composed in memory of the sudden death of Bach's first wife, Maria Barbara, is Bach's most profound work for solo instrument other than piano, and is a fitting climax to this collection by the Russian master.
