Description:
The French violin sonata tradition began with Fauré's first sonata, premiered in 1877, and continued with Saint-Saëns and Franck, and in the first half of the 20th century, Paris was home to many outstanding Paris-based performers, including Sarasate, Ysaÿe, Enescu, and Thibaud. The first half of the 20th century saw the birth of a succession of violin sonatas by Roussel and Lecoux. The Wagnerian impression glimpsed in the works of Roussel and Lecoux was dispelled by Debussy's supple masterpiece, which was further developed with the enchanting music of Ravel's sonatas. Jolivet's daring Sonata of 1932 marks another change. This collection offers a glimpse of the French violin sonatas inherited from the Franco-Belgian school of Paganini and Wuertin.
