In the second half of the nineteenth century, Tchaikovsky began to compose prolifically for strings alone, which had previously been rare. Tchaikovsky's music for strings is characterized by its breadth and consistency, culminating in the magnificent Violin Concerto and the Serenade for Strings, one of the masterpieces he conceived for string orchestra. wrote the incidental music for "The Snow Girl" by Rimsky-Korsakov. Tchaikovsky gave up writing the opera because Rimsky-Korsakov had composed one on the same subject. Included are the "Melodrama" from his "The Snow Girl" and the String Quartet in B minor, a work written when he was a 25-year-old student and arranged for string ensemble. In addition, a string quartet arranged by Glazunov to be played at Tchaikovsky's funeral. The collection also includes a masterpiece that is a delicate and sympathetic arrangement of this wonderful music for string ensemble, a truly noble tribute to a friend and a great composer.
