This set is a compilation of six CDs previously produced (and now unavailable) under the title Bach in Context, a remarkable complete reissue of a major collection of J.S. Bach's religious music reconstructed in its original liturgical context and performed according to the latest Bach research. Each of these six albums was released in 2012-14 to acclaim for both profound insight and performance excellence. In this series, Musica Amphion and Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam shed new light on J.S. Bach's masterpieces, performing quasi-liturgical arrangements of cantatas and organ works that accompany the "literary" and "musical" themes. A major feature of this "Bach in Context" is the use of the church organ and bass continuo as solo instruments. Each piece also begins with an organ piece (toccata or prelude) and ends with its fugue or other optional piece, exploring themes that J.S. Bach explored in his cantatas and motets, tied together by the chorale hymns from which the organ and vocal pieces originated, and which are common to Bach's music. The box also includes a 144-page luxury booklet (no Japanese).
