Jan W. J. Burgers' 2005 publication of the complete extant works of Ernst Gottlieb Baron is an outstanding study of late Baroque music. This recording is based on that work. There are 12 suites for solo lute and 10 ensembles with obbligato. Although most of the works are believed to have been lost, the surviving pieces are very rich in content. Most are simple suites consisting mainly of short pieces in two parts, but some of the solo pieces are of a different nature. The Partita in F major, included in this recording, has some gorgeous modulations that give the melody a wide range. The Sonata in B-flat major is so different from Weiss's own works that it was thought to be his own work. The lute part plays an important role that is very technical and requires a high level of ability. This is an original collection of music by Baron, who can be assumed to have been a master of the Gallant style.
