These Bruckner recordings vividly demonstrate the pinnacle of Karajan’s artistic maturity as he mastered the expansive forms and massive orchestrations of the late Romantic era. Listening to the two Bruckner symphonies recorded in 1970 and 1971 reveals just how much the orchestra’s musical character had transformed since the 1950s. While the Berlin Philharmonic’s pitch had traditionally been slightly high, under Karajan’s baton the orchestra decisively brightened its timbre and discovered a unique balance in the mid-to-high registers that was entirely distinct from German tradition. In Berlin, Karajan created a linear, unwavering vertical structure, a clear design, and smooth gradations, using the string section’s sublime legato as his weapon to build up layers of the ideal sound.
