Description:

The year 1938 saw the legendary sound of the prestigious Concertgebouw Orchestra resonate with Anner Bylsma’s radical intellect. This complete collection breathes life into the music through historical inquiry, elevating every performance—from the Viennese Classical to the Romantic periods—to the status of a “modern standard.” Aronkour had immersed himself deeply in the world of past centuries. This was likely an attempt to come even a little closer to answering the unanswerable question of how audiences of that era experienced the works of the great masters. He studied historical sources and learned how musicians of the time actually performed. For him, it was precisely this historical context that gave the music its color. His extraordinary talent lay in translating that knowledge into the sound and performance practices of the modern symphony orchestra. The relationship between Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra was one of the most transformative partnerships in the history of the modern orchestra, spanning 38 years and a total of 276 concerts. Beginning in 1975 (with Bach’s St. John Passion), this Austrian conductor introduced his radical philosophy of “historically informed performance (HIP)” to one of the world’s most traditional Romantic orchestras. This collaboration led the musicians to rethink their phrasing, articulation, and use of vibrato, ultimately bridging the gap between the good old symphonic sound and Baroque authenticity. What made this partnership unique was the mutual respect between the maestro and the orchestra. While many traditional orchestras initially resisted Annerose’s strict interpretation of the score, the musicians of the Concertgebouw—perhaps because the Netherlands was then in the midst of an early music revival—willingly embraced his intellectual rigor. Over the course of decades, they fused the orchestra’s legendary warmth with Annerose’s sharp, dramatic energy, forging a unique “Amsterdam Style” for performing the “Viennese Classical” composers such as Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven.
