APR's "French Piano School" series brings back to life the unique style and performances of master pianists nurtured by the famous teachers of the Paris Conservatory over a period of approximately 150 years. The latest three-disc set, a collection of recordings that will likely be the most important in the series, brings together some of the oldest and rarest piano recordings ever made in France and around the world, and includes complete solo recordings by every pianist except Wurmser. Newly remastered recordings include early phonotipia recordings by Ertz's pupil Roger-Microl, late Columbia electric recordings by Plante, recorded when he was 90 years old, and interpretations by famous pianists from the first half of the 19th century, including Saint-Saëns, Diémé, and Plante. The latest digital technology was used throughout the production, and Pugno's wonderful recordings, which previously suffered from vibrato caused by the unstable recording turntable used in 1903, can now be heard in a pitch-stable state.
