A native of Switzerland who made his mark primarily in Germany, he was not only a celebrated pianist but also a renowned teacher who instructed Paul Badura-Skoda, Daniel Barenboim, Alfred Brendel—not only as a pianist but also as a renowned teacher. Released by “APR”—a label trusted by piano enthusiasts for its high-quality reissues—this 3-CD set features both Edwin Fischer’s “best-known recordings” and his “rarest recordings.” The “Pre-War Schubert Recordings (CD 3),” previously released as a restoration by founder Brian Clamp, features Edwin Fischer’s most famous recordings; Andrew Halifax remastered them for inclusion in this set, improving the sound quality. In contrast, Brahms’s “String Quartet No. 1,” recorded in Germany on September 9, 1939—shortly after the outbreak of World War II—with members of the Edwin Fischer Chamber Orchestra, is an extremely rare recording, as is the 1947 Brahms recording, as well as the “Fantasy”—the only Schumann recording that Fischer himself described as “the embodiment of the soul of the piano”—are also exceptionally valuable recordings.
