The Tobias Massey School Vol. 5!■The Tobias Massey School, APR's highly acclaimed series of reissues of masterpieces by the students of Tobias Massey (1858-1945), a famous teacher of piano in England during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Following Eileen Joyce, Harriet Cohen, Eileen Schaller, and Myra Hess, the fifth in the series is the complete HMV recordings of Maura Limpany (1916-2005), a high school student in Massey's later years! In 1937, when Massey was 79 years old, Limpany studied piano with him, and the following year, in 1938, he won the second prize at the Isay International Competition (now the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition), second only to Guilleris.He is also known as a specialist in the Romantic and Russian repertoire, having recorded the British premiere of Khachaturian's piano concerto in the 1940s and the complete Rachmaninoff preludes for Decca. The HMV recordings to be reissued by APR this time are valuable recordings made during the period between his recordings for Decca again in the 1950s, and we can expect great improvements in sound quality.
