Recorded in the late 1970s during his golden era with EMI, Riccardo Muti's complete Tchaikovsky symphony cycle—conducted in his thirties as Principal Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra—remains a shining standard nearly half a century after its creation. Gramophone magazine praised it upon its initial release, stating: "The conductor's intense focus is tempered by expressive warmth and a sharp sense of fantasy," and "It is one of the most consistent and warmly recommended recordings to date." Muti's performances are characterized by the dramatic structuring honed in Italian opera and a profoundly singing "cantabile" sensibility.With dynamic drive and passionate expression, yet allowing each section of the orchestra to sound clearly, it perfectly captures the fantastical colors and lyricism hidden within Tchaikovsky's score. This collection centers on his legendary complete symphony recordings (Nos. 1–6). It also encompasses key orchestral works from analog recordings, including the Manfred Symphony and the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, both of which have garnered acclaim for Muti's interpretation. Furthermore, the Piano Concerto No. 1, featuring 1974 Tchaikovsky Competition winner Andrei Gabrilov as soloist, captures a magnificent performance where Muti's passionate baton and Gabrilov's "breathtaking" virtuosity spark electrifying fireworks. This is a monumental Tchaikovsky recording, brimming throughout with the young maestro's brilliance and energy. Regarding SACD1-4, these were not remastered for the 2021 release of the 'Muti Complete Box Set'. For the first time, they have been high-resolution remastered from the original master tapes by Studio Circe in Paris in 2025. Thanks to the high performance of the SACD format, you can now enjoy unprecedented detail. SACD5's Manfred Symphony, an early digital recording, has been remastered by engineer Kosei Fujita, known for numerous remasters.
