Description:
February 10, 2026, one year after Maria Tipo's death. Maria Tipo was known as the "Horowitz of Naples" for her astonishing virtuosity and deep lyricism that made the piano sing. The art of Maria Tipo, an Italian legend, and its trajectory. This box set includes all of her recordings for the former EMI. Maria Tipo (1931-2025) began playing the piano at the age of three and was trained by her mother, Ercilia Cavallo, a pupil of Busoni. He later studied with Alfredo Casella and Guido Agosti, and won major competitions such as the Geneva International Music Competition (1949), and after the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition (1952), he studied with Arthur Rubinstein. After giving over 300 concerts in her early career, she earned the nickname "Horowitz of Naples. In later years, partly due to her distaste for the isolated lifestyle of soloists and partly due to social barriers against women musicians, she began to reduce her performing activities and instead devoted herself to teaching in Geneva, Bolzano, and Florence. From the 1980s onward, she recorded major works for the EMI label. These included Bach's "Goltberg Variations" (1986), "Bach Arrangements by Busoni" (1988), "Bach: Six Partitas" (1992), and Chopin's "Nocturnes" (1994), always marked by warm, singing cantabile and individual tempo settings. Tipo's music was always marked by warm, sing-song cantabile and individual tempo settings. Tipo achieved the first ever recording of Clementi's complete sonatas in their entirety (Phonit Chetra). This recording reveals Clementi's overlooked genius for rhythmic dynamism, bel canto expressiveness, and rubato. It remains one of her most important contributions to the history of piano recordings. Throughout her career, Tipo focused on making the piano "sing" like the human voice. This was a credo she inherited from her mother and rooted in the tradition of Italian pianism. This lyrical approach characterized his interpretations of Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, and Chopin, culminating in Chopin's "Nocturnes," his last recording before retirement. Tipo's recordings remain a precious testament to his artistry, which combined astonishing technique with a profoundly human sensibility. Warner Music Japan
