The Planets is the most frequently performed piece of 20th century British music, and has an immediate and enduring appeal to music lovers of all ages. The Planets is not a typically "British" work. Holst's diverse musical world was shaped by his interest in astrology, Sanskrit literature, and his respect for his contemporaries, especially Debussy, Stravinsky, Ravel, and Scriabin. This remarkable live recording, made in 2006, has been long awaited by the Berlin Philharmonic. The orchestra had not recorded "The Planets" since Karajan's legendary 1981 recording. Sir Simon Rattle had previously recorded "The Planets" with the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1980 with great success.In addition to Holst's "The Planets," Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic have recorded a companion work, "Pluto," by British composer Colin Matthews. This work is intended as a sequel to "The Planets. This recording with Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra was acclaimed as a masterful performance "with a dynamic range and weight" that surpassed the Rattle and Philharmonia Orchestra recordings of the 1970s and 1980s, and was especially praised for the recording's dynamic range and beautiful weak sound.
