Description:
New Pictures at an Exhibition" with a piece inspired by a painting by illustrator Bob Peake, performed under the direction of Leonard Slatkin! Bob Peake (1927-1992) was one of the leading American commercial illustrators of the late 20th century, known especially for his innovations in the field of movie posters. His style is characterized by dynamic, painterly, and fantastical compositions and vivid color expression. His movie posters have formed the visual identity of some of the greatest films in cinema history, most notably West Side Story" (1961), "My Fair Lady" (1964), "Camelot" (1967), "Hell's Revelation" (1979), "Star Trek (all six films in the original series)" (1979-1991), "Superman" (1978), among others. He was also a prolific artist who worked on numerous commissions for TIME magazine and the Olympics. His innovative style, which combines a painterly touch with graphic design, and his use of airbrush and hand-painted watercolor and gouache to create fantastical and emotionally rich expressions, has had a profound influence on later film posters and advertising illustrations. Released as a starting point for the intersection of the worlds of music, visual art, and film, this is a brilliant new project by producer Robert Townson. The works (each movement) on this album were composed by ten renowned composers of contemporary film music, each inspired by the original drawings of Bob Peake's unique body of work.Comprised of world premiere recordings, "Pictures at an Exhibition: Bob Peake's Paintings" is based on the concept of Mussorgsky's immortal masterpiece and is brought to new life by the Los Angeles Film Orchestra under the baton of conductor Leonard Slatkin.
