Description:
Fabienne Delsol does modern garage psych as well as anyone; her handful of solo albums have been mysterious, magical delights full of drama and intrigue; its no wonder that one of her songs ended up on the soundtrack of Killing Eve. Any music coordinator looking for a song that combines the hooky pop of French ye-ye, the guitar and keys swirl of psychedelia, the stomp of freakbeat, and the sweetness of the beat group era would do well to pick any one of her songs. There are plenty of fine examples of Delsol at her best on her 2026 record Indigo Red. Co-produced by Ed Deegan and Delsol herself with a crack band of contributors (Thomas Gardner, Carwyn Ellis) on board, the record sounds typically good, coated in reverb and echo but still cracking like a whip with Delsols voice soaring over the top. Its clear that Delsol put a lot of thought and care into the sound of the record and her effort pays off as it not only sounds like it time traveled from the year 1968 or so, but it also puts most of the records made in that era to shame. The combo of sounds and vocal is perfect and to top it off, the songs dont miss a beat. As always, her choice in covers in spot on. Here she gives Sharon Tandys already super witchy “Daughter of the Moon” an extra pinch of eye of newt, or at least some super cool phaser on the vocals; she also does something nice with Silver Apples "I Have Known Love" by dialing down the mania of the original and making it a melancholy dream of a song, complete with hypnotic drums and mellotron. The original songs are quite good, too. "She Is Gone" has some wonderful 12-string guitar jangle, "If All Things Were Never Said" is a gloomy dream, "Peacekeeper" is a lovely ballad that shows off another dimension of the singer and band, and "Black Sheep" is a thunderous midtempo rocker that would be just right for a scene in a film where the protagonist drives away from the scene of heartbreak with furious tears gathering in their eyes. Every song on the album lends itself to that kind of cinematic dreaming, just like much of her work leading up to this point has. Maybe even more so than ever. Indigo Red could easily be seen as the high point of Delsols career to date, it really feels like shes hit the dead center of where she wants to be both musically and emotionally, and thats a place well worth settling into for a while, popcorn in hand. ~ Tim Sendra
