Born in Southampton and based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, HOWARDJONES is a pioneer of British synth-pop. After moving to Canada as a child, he returned to the UK and formed the progressive rock band WARRIOR before going solo to pursue his own unique electronic sound. He fused electronics—utilizing cutting-edge equipment such as the ROLAND JUPITER-8 and YAMAHA DX7—with accessible melodies. After bursting onto the scene with his 1983 debut single “NEW SONG,” he went on to reach No. 1 on the UK charts with his 1984 debut album *HUMAN’S LIB*, leaving a striking mark on the new wave scene. This is a rare, unearthed live recording capturing the full scope of the electrifying performance held on December 22, 1983—immediately after his breakthrough—at the town hall in his hometown of High Wycombe. This record of a night long known only through video footage has been released on CD for the first time in its complete track order, following a recent remix and remastering from the original multitrack master tapes. “NEWSONG,” where dynamic, repetitive synthesizer patterns fill the space with a pop sensibility; “PEARLINTHESHELL,” which reconstructs the resonance of wind instruments with electronic sounds; “WHATISLOVE?,” where conversational vocals incite the audience’s frenzy; and the previously unreleased “DINGDONGMERRILYONHIGH,” which sets a Christmas song to a unique beat—these 15 tracks, with their raw, granular electronic sounds, vividly convey the excitement of that era. The album meticulously captures an overwhelming performance where the raw energy of their early days intersects with a fully developed pop sensibility. A historic document capturing the moment, during the dawn of synth-pop, when a young man, armed with electronic instruments, swept the audience into a whirlwind of excitement. It is a treasure that vividly revives the unique atmosphere of the UK scene at the time and the artist’s early creative impulses.
