Marking the centenary of Birgit Nilsson's birth: the celebrated former EMI "Turandot", long regarded as the finest recording of the opera ever made, reissued with a Japanese translation of the libretto. First release worldwide on SACD. To mark the centenary of Birgit Nilsson's birth, her signature role of Turandot is reissued complete with a Japanese translation of the libretto, allowing this landmark of the operatic discography to be enjoyed in full on SACD. This former EMI classic is a model of opera recording, capturing the voices of Corelli and Scotto at the height of their powers in a wholly natural acoustic. For this reissue the original master held in the home country was digitised at 96kHz/24bit, and separate new masterings were prepared for the SACD and CD layers. A release to keep for good. Nilsson left many Wagner recordings, including Tristan and the Ring, but it is perhaps less widely known today that she was also active in the Italian repertoire. Her often-quoted remark - "Isolde made me famous, Turandot made me rich" - says it all: in the opera houses of the world at that time, Turandot meant Nilsson. In this most demanding of roles, which calls for a piercing, unwavering sound, Nilsson's voice is overwhelming and yet humane, with feeling held in reserve beneath the surface, and the recording remains one of the finest available. Nilsson made two stereo studio recordings of the opera; the later one, from 1965, is the former EMI set offered here. It is not a hi-fi spectacular, but at a time when many studio recordings had the orchestra so strong that the voices struggled to come through, this one keeps the voices firmly at the centre, a clear reflection of EMI's policy of aiming at an orthodox account of the opera. The conductor Molinari-Pradelli, too, takes great care to breathe with his singers and shapes the work as a whole magnificently, with the excellence of the chorus adding further lustre. Fine vocal textures and the orchestral colours of the period are exactly what the DSD format does best; the master was in good condition, and the reissue comes very close indeed to the sound of the original. This is the first complete opera to appear in the series. Issued in a special centenary edition with a Japanese translation of the libretto, in a limited pressing. (1/2)
