The vivid sound is brought back to life with the latest remastering from the original masters! A collection of “Beethoven: Overtures” recorded in stereo. Rich, full-bodied strings and bright woodwinds. This collection includes six stereo recordings in total, ranging from the “Leonore Overture No. 3” (recorded in 1958) to the “Fidelio” Overture (recorded in 1960). This collection of overtures was not originally released as a complete set; instead, the pieces first appeared individually on the B-sides of symphony LPs before being compiled and released as a reissue LP. Consequently, while Tower Records’ previous reissue projects have typically retained the original jacket designs, for this reissue we modified the text on the left side of the symphony jacket design—which appeared in the blank spaces (specifically, the jacket featuring a profile of Klyuchantsov on the right, as used for Symphony No. 2 and No. 3)—and used that version instead. During this period, the Berlin Philharmonic’s woodwind section—composed primarily of so-called legendary musicians such as flutist Nicollet (who left the orchestra in 1959), oboist Steins, and clarinetist Steer—maintained the orchestra’s traditional rich sound alongside the strings, (Koch and Leister also joined the orchestra around this time), allowing listeners to experience a sound from a bygone era—one distinct from the later Karajan era. While retaining echoes of the Furtwängler era, this recording captures a fleeting moment in the sound of this prestigious orchestra as it was undergoing a transformation under Karajan. The sound of this recording—made possible by the presence of a conductor like Klyutants, who brought a distinct conceptual approach to sound—is truly precious; indeed, it is an intriguing phenomenon that their standard repertoire—Beethoven—is rendered with even greater charm here. During this period, the Berlin Philharmonic recorded several Beethoven overture collections with various conductors; a comparison with the recording by Vandernoot—also on the same label—is particularly interesting (recorded around 1960; the program is identical except for the “Ruins of Athens” overture. Currently available as the Tower Records special edition QIAG50072). Sonically, this reissue has revived the rich, pyramid-like sound of the Berlin Philharmonic from that era. The separation of individual instruments has improved; the sound, which previously felt like a single mass, has opened up, allowing listeners to fully appreciate the timbre of each instrument.
