Akira Ifukube is famous for his music for the film Godzilla. Among his pupils, Taichiro Kosugi was one of those his teacher trusted most, and he went on to write music for more than 300 films, including the Toei animated series Cyborg 009 (1966-68), Toei's Miyamoto Musashi series directed by Tomu Uchida and Nikkatsu's The Rambling Guitarist series. Until now he has been known only for his film scores, but in 2007 a number of manuscripts of concert works he had written during his lifetime were discovered at the Kosugi family home. This prompted the present CD project, "The Concert Music of Taichiro Kosugi", conceived to record the rediscovered works one by one and build them into a complete edition. Six years went into the production - editing the scores, negotiating with performers, researching the circumstances of composition - and four works, including the newly found manuscripts, were recorded in the studio. In addition, the tape of the premiere of the dance suite "Sengoku Jidai" (The Age of Civil Wars), conducted by the composer himself, has been given a state-of-the-art digital remastering and appears here for the first time. Other highlights include the first revival in sixty years of the Concerto for Six Wind Instruments (first prize in the chamber music composition division of the 21st Mainichi Music Competition, now the Japan Music Competition) and a complete recording of the koto piece "Sorin" - heard in Kon Ichikawa's film The Inugami Family (1976, Toho) - performed by the players who commissioned and premiered it. Every work here is receiving its first release on CD, and the forces range from two pianos to full orchestra. The performers are a distinguished line-up including principal players of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra (as of March 2012) and Kazuhiro Takagi (now solo concertmaster of the Yamagata Symphony Orchestra). With a 102-page booklet that illuminates the little-known life of a composer who died at just 49, this is a unique and definitive collection of his concert music.
