Gong, led by the eccentric David Allen and his wife Jiri Smyth, stood out not only in the progressive rock scene but also within the Canterbury music scene, while gaining worldwide support and maintaining an active career. In 1971, they signed with the up-and-coming French label BYG and released their second album, *Camembert Electrique*; this marked a revolutionary evolution in the band’s sound, allowing them to establish a unique style.
After signing with Virgin Records—a fledgling label specializing in progressive rock at the time—the band made the leap to the mainstream scene thanks to the success of the “Radio Noam Invisible” trilogy. Now, a live album capturing Gong’s tour following the release of *You* is finally here!
Although the band was on the rise, drummer Pierre Moulin left the group, and new recruit Laurie Allen faced drug-related issues. As a result, they enlisted Bill Bruford—the legendary drummer from King Crimson, who had just disbanded—as a session musician to support them on the tour. The concert in Oslo, Norway, on December 15, 1974—the final show of the tour featuring Bill Bruford—was recorded and broadcast as a special program by a local FM radio station. This release is a valuable archive containing the complete recording, including medleys and Steve Hillage’s solo numbers. While the audio previously provided by the Norwegian radio station consisted of 11 tracks, the addition of the four newly unearthed tracks from the second half of the concert makes this a long-awaited live album for fans, offering a complete picture of the concert as it happened.
Centered around songs from *Angel’s Egg* (original title: *Angel’s Egg (Radio Gnome Invisible Part 2)*) and *You*, the live performance—supported by Bill Bruford—surpasses Gong’s previous live performances with its highly technical content! They also perform “Solar Music Suite,” the main track from Steve Hillage’s debut solo album *Fish Rising*, released around the same time. As a bonus track, the album includes a performance from a 1973 BBC Radio appearance featuring Pierre Moulin and Jiri Smyth.
