A long-awaited, heartfelt masterpiece born after 13 years. An album in which music and life resonate to the utmost, imbued with every emotion of life. From 2017 to 2018, Song Dongye released three singles in quick succession—"Airport Song," "Guo Yuanchao," and “I Understand,” effortlessly transcending the boundaries of folk music and redefining his place in the Chinese music scene. Thirteen years after North of Anhe Bridge, his second full-length album, Think Again, was completed. Produced entirely by Song Dongye himself, its content continues to surpass people’s expectations. This album astonishes listeners with the depth of its lyrics, the multi-layered soundscapes, and the overwhelming density of information that emerges from them. The sheer scale of the project is evident from the recording credits: alongside Song Dongye, the list includes over 20 different instruments and sound sources, as well as some of the Chinese jazz scene’s top players—such as Wen Zhiyong, Xia Jia, and Gao Taihang—and the reclusive, taciturn independent musician Xing Jiangbo. Song Dongye, who single-handedly handled the lyrics, composition, arrangement, and production, has built a vast and complex aesthetic world together with his allies, synchronizing the deepest life experiences he has accumulated over the past 13 years with a renewed perspective on music and technical maturity. At times, he deliberately adopts a mischievous attitude, as if he’s seen it all. It seems to be a gesture meant to balance his absolute seriousness and love for music. For example, the casual way he uses a photo of his cat’s rear end as the cover art for a record. His photographic work, too, is filled with a gaze that observes the surrounding world from a unique distance. The contours of his personality as an individual are clearly evident in this album. From the scream-like “Talk to Me,” the contemplative “Airport Song,” the roaring “Guo Yuanchao,” the chant-like “Afterword,” to the whispering “Think Again”—through all of them. It’s as if he suddenly and completely grasped the “strategy” of music. He conceals his technique within magnificent, straightforward compositions and portrays cruelty with a light touch. All of it is relentlessly meticulous, yet at the same time astonishingly free. Even the exaggerated sense of fragmentation and theatricality found in “A Person I Should Know” and the mischievous collages and arrangements in “Farewell (Outro)” do not feel absurd. (1/2)
